We are focusing on the Wampanoag Tribe as they are a major piece of the history of Martha's Vineyard and continue as a large population on the Vineyard today.

Of additional interest, it was the Wampanoag and Chief Massasoit that welcomed the Pilgrims in 1620. Fishing, hunting and agriculture were large parts of the Wampanoag life and they shared these skills and experiences with the Pilgrims and helped the Pilgrims acclimate to the Massachusetts environment.
