The Kennedy family has a very interesting history. They have experienced much success, as well as an unusual amount of pain and tragedy.

Many members of the Kennedy family have ties to Martha's Vineyard. The "Kennedy Compound" is in Hyannis Port, just across Nantucket Sound on Cape Cod.

For years, the Kennedy's enjoyed the Edgartown sailing regatta and Ted Kennedy was involved in the Chappaquiddick incident back in 1969.

John Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette died while flying his small private plane from NY to Martha's Vineyard in 1999.


Family Background

The Kennedys are descendants of a first generation American, Patrick Kennedy. They have sent a number of members through Harvard and have been heavily involved in politics.

While the Kennedy family has experienced great success, power and almost "royalty" status, they have also experienced pain and tragedy.

John F Kennedy

JFK was the 35th President of the United States. He was a popular, motivational leader and many folks were intrigued with him and his wife Jackie Kennedy.

He served in World War II as a commander of a PT boat and then in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. In 1960 he defeated Richard Nixon and became the 35th President.

He was assassinated in 1963 and Lee Harvey Oswald was charged for the crime. However, a 1979 House Select Committee declared there was likely a conspiracy that included Oswald and debate and theories continues to this day.

Jackie Kennedy

Jacqueline Bouvier dated John Kennedy when he was a congressman. They became engaged in 1953 and were married in Newport, RI in September 1953.

Although the public may have memories of a young, attractive and seemingly happy couple, Jackie and John had difficulties early in their marriage. John had chronic back pain from a war injury and Jackie had a hard time adjusting to the political life and the life of the Kennedys.

Jackie gave birth to a stillborn daughter in 1956 and the couple separated briefly.

After getting back together, Caroline and then John Jr were born.

When John decided to run for President in 1960, Jackie became an active "candidates wife", speaking in local stores, visiting high schools and writing a weekly newspaper column.

When JFK won the election, Jackie became one of the youngest first ladies at 31 years old. She was an extremely popular first lady and was known for her beauty, class and intelligence.

Ted Kennedy

Ted has served as a Massachusetts Senator since 1962.

He was also involved in a horrible accident on Chappaquiddick on Martha's Vineyard in 1969.

John F Kennedy Jr

JFK Jr was the son of President John F Kennedy. He was treated by many folks like an "American prince", and was one of the "rising stars" of the Kennedy family, but unfortunately died in a plane crash while flying to Martha's Vineyard airport in 1999.

Carolyn Bessette

Carolyn Bessette was the wife of John Kennedy Jr. and also died in a plane crash while flying to Martha's Vineyard airport in 1999.

Caroline Kennedy

Caroline Kennedy is the only surviving child of President John F Kennedy. She's the niece of Senator Ted Kennedy and the sister of John F Kennedy Jr.

Patrick Kennedy

Patrick is the son of Senator Edward Kennedy and nephew of President John F Kennedy. He represents Rhode Island in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Patrick has had some problems with prescription medication and alcohol. He was involved in two car accidents, in April and May 2006, in which he may have been impaired from the use of prescription drugs or alcohol.

He has focused on health care during his career and has received a few awards for his work.
