Yes, the classic Jaws movie was filmed on Martha's Vineyard in 1975.
Specific filming locations included:
- American Legion Memorial Bridge and Joseph Sylva State Beach
- Edgartown
- Menemsha
- Oak Bluffs
- Aquinnah
Of course Steven Spielberg's film was fictitious and there has not been a great white attack in Massachusetts waters since 1936.However, in July 2008, town officials closed beaches then reopened them after two fishermen made separate reports about seeing a 15 ft great white shark.
There were no attacks, but the sightings remind folks of the classic movie that was filmed here.
For what it's worth, the Martha's Vineyard shark-fishing tournament has operated for 19 years and a great white shark has never been caught.
