A James Taylor biography would have to at least mention his connections to Martha's Vineyard. Although there are other more significant events and topics in his life, some of his early performances were in coffeehouses on the Vineyard in the early 1960's.
Of course he was also married to Carly Simon for 11 years and they spent time on Martha's Vineyard. JT's brother Hugh also runs The Outermost Inn in Aquinnah.
James Taylor has had a hugely successful singer-songwriter career, writing and singing so many songs loved by folks of all ages. He's also had many challenges and problems over the years.
Everyone in the Taylor family had musical talents and James started his musical career at an early age but had struggles with loneliness, depression, alcohol and drugs and in 1965 he committed himself to McLean Psychiatric Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts.
After ten months, he discharged himself and went to NY and continued performing and recording. In the early 1970's he had success with "Fire and Rain", "Sweet Baby James", "Carolina in My Mind" and "You've Got a Friend".
His marriage to Carly Simon was in 1972 and they had their hit duet "Mockingbird" in 1974.
