Family Friendly Vacations
Guide to a Martha's Vineyard Family Vacation

Martha's Vineyard offers plenty of fun activities for families.

Family friendly vacations on the island can range from short daytrips to weeklong getaways and from "budget style" to "luxury splurging".

These are some of the things our family has enjoyed while visiting Martha's Vineyard...

Family Friendly Vacations

Jumping off a Bridge

... Yes, it sounds dangerous, but it's relatively safe...At the Joseph Sylvia State Beach between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, crowds of young and old folks wait along the railing of the American Legion Memorial Bridge and jump about 15 feet into the water below. This is a fun spot to "people watch" ...or...take a leap ! Watch out for Jaws !

Eat a Muffin

... The Black Dog Tavern and Bakery in Vineyard Haven is renown for the Black Dog t-shirts and hats. Of course it all started as a restaurant/tavern and visiting the original tavern and bakery is a great chance to treat your senses to the wonderful smells and well as be amazed at the huge variety of products that now sport the Black Dog logo.

Clambake and Sunset on the Water

... Menemsha is a popular spot to "kick back", have some food and drinks and watch the sunset over the water. We went to the beach here early in the day so we had our parking spot but if you plan to arrive just in time for the can be crowded and parking is limited.

Thrill the Kids for $1.50

... The flying horse carousel in Oak Bluffs is a classic, fun kids activity and is a bargain at $1.50. This is NOT your typical county fair carousel, it has alot of character and history. There also are some arcade games in the same building but the carousel is special.

Get Mad about Ice Cream

... The legendary ice cream spot on Martha's Vineyard is Mad Martha's. They have stores in Oak Bluffs, Edgartown and Vineyard Haven and yummy, yummy ice cream. You can't have family friendly vacations without ice cream !

Get some Exercise

... There are many scenic places to ride bikes on Martha's Vineyard, and there is a bike path between Vineyard Haven and Edgartown. Numerous businesses rent bicycles in Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown.

Find Live Starfish

... Yes, we found a great spot in Menemsha Harbor near the boat docks. It's a sheltered area that kids can easily wade in and our kids, and others, found 2-3 starfish apiece. There are also crabs and little minnows...great fun for kids !

Fresh, Homemade Fudge

... Murdick's Fudge is another fun "treat to your senses" (like Mad Martha's and The Black Dog). They have tremendous, homemade fudge. If you're lucky, you may get to see them making it !

A Good Italian Family Meal

... Giordano's Family Restaurant, in Oak Bluffs, is a good family restaurant. They have a wide range of Italian food (pasta, lasagna, pizza...) and the atmosphere is very "homey"...warm, friendly, a bit loud but in a good way.

Pet an Alpaca

... Until you see an alpaca in person and up close, you don't really appreciate how cool these animals are. The Island Alpaca Company is an alpaca farm and has many alpaca to view as well as sweaters, hats etc to purchase.

We hope these ideas help you in planning for your family friendly vacations...
